What makes the job exciting

I love the challenges that come my way, the responsibilities given to me — especially the diversity of the work that I do. Also, I am given the freedom to take up things on my own and lead those projects up front. These things keep me on my toes all the time.

Thoughts on startup success

Make sure you’re in the right market — it’s always good to be in the spotlight to get the attention you need among the media and your customer base. Have a great team in place — your chemistry has to be great. The co-founders, especially, must get along really well. Focus on customer and stakeholder value — be very open to taking feedback from your customers and other stakeholders about what’s working and what’s not. Analyse that feedback and close the loop. Constantly analyse and pivot, if and when required.

Views on entrepreneurship

Get the basics right — things like processes around customer feedback, business reviews and getting the culture right. Hire the right team — they are the foundation for creating a big and successful company. If you get those basics right and if you’re in the right market, you can build a great business around that.

What I like about Kalaari

The people, the complexity of the work and the tough calls that I have to make at times. We make the best judgement we can with whatever information we have and sometimes you have to pass over an opportunity. But it’s a great opportunity to meet such a diverse set of people and discovering their viewpoint.
