The Zivame Story
Before Zivame, buying lingerie in India was a very public, somewhat awkward and often frustrating experience. Co-founder Richa Kar discovered the problem at an earlier job and decided to find a solution that gave women across India access to the brands, fits and sizes that they wanted without having to hunt for them or deal with unhelpful sales staff. Founded in 2011, Zivame provides a user-friendly search-and-buy experience and a hassle-free returns policy that has won it a loyal following.

Recipe for success
I think there is no set formula for success. Every startup should find its own raison d’etre.
Having said so, these are the few broad principles that successful startups embody.
- There is no greater rebellion than creativity. Keep moving and move innovatively. There is no room for stagnation in a dynamic startup environment. Constantly ask yourself, “What did you do better this week than last week?”
- Bring people on board for their ability more than their experience and knowledge. In a world with ever-evolving technology and transformational ideas, you’ll find them more comfortable with change.
- Never settle. A sense of positive dissatisfaction throughout the team will enable you to constantly improvise.
- Be in a constant pursuit to understand your consumer.

Starting from the taboo surrounding lingerie, inexperienced salesmen, unavailability of sizes to inadequate style options, lingerie shopping has never been a pleasure for the Indian woman. Zivame is a place for women to embrace their bodies and build their confidence through lingerie, without having to worry about anything else.

Getting an investor interested is a challenge for every entrepreneur who’s starting out. When I first met the Kalaari team, I had mixed feelings – I was a little nervous and at the same time very hopeful since I believed in Zivame. Vani, being a woman, took just 10 minutes to understand the potential of the business model. Looking back, I’m convinced that the most important part of this process is to be honest and self-aware. One must be prepared to have candid discussions on the strengths and weaknesses of the idea and the team. This helps in building trust, as an investor is actually investing in you, not just in the idea.
