Piyush Agrawal, Founder and CEO of Superprofs: Mobile is where the action is – here’s why!
Why are apps emerging as the next hottest thing in the online coaching space?
July 1st, 2015
Mobile handsets have changed the way we live. Apps are enabling shopping, communication, work and entertainment. The best part is there’s room for apps to facilitate much more.
Coaching for entrance exams is big business in India. At any point in time, an estimated 10 million students studying in class 12 and higher are preparing for a variety of entrance exams. If you factor in students in classes 9 to 11 who have started their entrance exam preparations early, the tally rises to 20 million aspirants.
Collectively, these students run up a coaching tab of about rupees 50,000 Crore (approx.. $8 billion). Not surprisingly, there’s a mad rush for the best coaches. In fact, those living in metros and in towns renowned for their coaching centres are considered lucky.
Unless they relocate, students in smaller places fall behind in getting access to the best guidance and therefore, in bagging the best seats. Recognising this lacuna, a number of online coaching classes have mushroomed for the benefit of students across the country. That is also how we at Superprofs started out. But we have quickly moved ahead!
With the launch of the Superprofs app, we’re harnessing the power of mobile handsets to facilitate “anytime, anywhere” learning and coaching.
There’s a clear case for mobile-based education, especially in the test-preparation and training segment.
Everyone carries a smartphone. This is particularly good for students who use it for exam preparation. It’s like having your coach around you 24×7. So no matter when you study best, early morning or at sunset, your coach is always on standby.
Proponents of online coaching point out that it saves students a lot of commuting time. Time saved can be utilised more productively. Mobile education, we say, strengthens this argument. Students needn’t even confine their study to a desk. With the Superprofs’ mobile app, students can study wherever they please, even riding on the school bus.
Students signing up for Superprofs gain access to carefully created study content. We also offer access to curated video lectures of top professors.
It is challenging to deliver good quality video content over mobile devices because of bandwidth constraints, non-availability of consistent internet connectivity, small screen size, and other factors. To tide over these issues, we have created special videos optimized for viewing on handsets. We’ve left no stone unturned to ensure that all of these videos are high definition. After all, better viewing experiences make for longer attention spans and for better student understanding.
Mobile-based coaching has other major advantages over regular online coaching.
Parents tend to be wary of online coaching because it depends on internet connectivity. We’ve had parents ask—what if there’s no internet the day before the exam It’s a valid question.
Then of course there are the known advantages of online education over offline coaching, which apply to m-education as well.
In offline coaching, there’s always the possibility that only a couple of professors are really good giving the training centre a great reputation, but students have to make do with some not-so-noteworthy professors as well. Not so at SuperProfs. Our 100+ professors are whizzes in their respective subject.
Professorial guidance is available through weekly live doubt clearing sessions. Subject matter experts answer questions at those sessions. There’s no question of a doubt remaining unanswered with our panel of 100+ professors.
Additionally students can post questions on forums, which are answered by experts as well as by the large community of students. Speaking of community, students signing up for Superprofs compete against bright students from across India, which gives them a clearer perspective of where they stand.
For sure, we foresee the online coaching space becoming increasingly mobile-driven in the years to come. We’re determined to play a key role in this transition. Being the first mover in the space will help achieve that goal.
